Surrendering Of Indian Passports

Under the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955, does not allow dual citizenship. Holding Indian Passport / acquiring Indian Passport / travelling on Indian passport after acquisition of foreign citizenship constitutes an offence under the Indian Passport Act, 1967, and attracts penalties.

Under the Indian law, Persons of Indian Origin who have acquired foreign Nationality are required to surrender their Indian passports, immediately after acquisition of foreign citizenship.

The Government of India has prescribed imposition of penalty on a graded scale, depending on number of trips made on Indian passport after acquiring foreign nationality, for the violation of Passport Rules and retention of Indian Passport for more than 3 years after acquiring of foreign nationality.

Documents required for surrender of Indian Passports

FEES

Surrendering Indian Passport till 31.05.2010 - £75.00
Surrendering Indian Passport with effect from 1.06.2010 - £155.00
Cheques or postal orders payable to “India Visa Head Office”
Please send your documents Royal mail special delivery
One Pre Paid Special Delivery SAE with the correct address and postcode is required for the return of your documents.

If penalties fees occur the high commission of India will advise accordingly.

Processing time would be a minimum of 3-4 working days; it may take longer in certain cases. Surrender certificates are issued at the discretion of the High Commission of India London.

NOTE: The above documents do not guarantee you a surrender certificate, the High Commission of India has the right to ask for additional documentation if required.
