Indian’s must surrender Indian passports before obtaining visa for India

Under Indian law, Persons of Indian origin who have acquired Foreign citizenship are required to surrender their Indian Passports to the nearest Indian Mission/Post immediately after acquisition of foreign citizenship. The Indian Citizenship Act does not allow dual citizenship. Holding Indian passport/acquiring Indian passport/traveling on Indian passport after acquisition of foreign citizenship constitutes an offence under the Passport Act and attracts penalties.

In view of this legal provision all foreign nationals of Indian origin applying for Indian visa, OCI/PIO card or other consular services are required to surrender their Indian passports (valid/Expired) to the High Commission of India, London and at Consulates General of India at Birmingham & Edinburgh respectively. They would be issued surrender certificate in lieu of depositing their Indian passports.

A fee of £90 for renouncing Indian citizenship/surrender of Indian passport is chargeable. The surrender certificate will be issued in 7-10 working days. Penalty cases would take more time.

Interesting blog, as an expat Brit, now living in Argentina, this was especially interesting.

WHO DO I MAKE THE POSTAL ORDER PAYABLE TO? FOR SURRENDER APP THROUGH POST?

    @ J Singh

Who the fuck do you think you are to boycott India? You think India gives a flying fuck about some random J Singh not going to India? What are you Singh “paaji”? Canadian? Australian? The world would not hear for a couple of years if Canada or Australia no longer existed. You think India will feel any pinch from a taxi driver like you boycotting India? India is a major world power, not like Canada or Australia (or NZ … lol!) Stay and drive your taxi in whatever country you have immigrated to. With all the major businessmen rushing to India on their hands and knees, I suggest you keep your taxi driving skills in your new country.

The HCI is a complete joke!!! Incompetent staff, rude attitude and a total MESS!!!
The process is stupid, if visas are outsourced why don’t the HCI outsource on surrending passport.
HCI will never get it right on how they should conduct there work and processes. They are good at puting charges on everything and all you get is crap service!!!

  7. d says:

P.S If anyone is thinking of posting their application PLEASE DONT!!! There were people there who had forwarded there application two months ago and hadn’t heard anything!!!!!!!!
Apprently if postal applications are incomplete they sit around until YOU call them or chase it….you still won’t get a decent response either way!!

on canadian consular website it is written that they provide attestation service but dont specify whether they dont attest driving licenses, i called consular services they said we attest, later when i went to the office they said we dont do and said it does not matter whats on website. and when i asked what is the name of the staff who was answering my issues, he said GET lost to me, and said he wont share his name , pathetic, and indecent staff at counsal office, i mean policies can change but they do not address issues humanly. wonder when will think they are also our country’s representatives & start behaving nicely.

    @ S Singh

They killed your brothers, destroyed your Gurudwaras and holy scripts, raped your women, killed your children and still you dont get it. Mr. S Singh, what on earth is wrong with you. Have you forgotten 1984 blood bath? I think if this doesn’t move you, nothing will. Please see the facts and stop being fooled. Its 25 years since 84, but the victims are still awaiting justice and trials of those responsible. Is this the country you want to defend? Is this Mera Bharat Mahan! … Sikhs have given their life since the Moghul raj, but… is India grateful to the race? Please think.

S Singh is just an asshole, who has nothing constructive to write, and cannot express himself without the use of swear words. A very small minded idiot, go and pander to the Indian authorities, who are the worlds most corrupt. No I am not a taxi driver, and I do not have anything against them, they make a decent living, I am just a young retired guy.
